Our story

A long history of success.

More than 60 years of “Wiedmer removals” – long may the story continue!

January 2021
We are delighted to welcome two more new faces to the management team. With immediate effect, Adrian Hinder (previously Deputy Head of Operations) has assumed responsibility for all removals and cleaning activities as Head of Operations. Hannes Weinberger (previously Deputy Head of Sales) is now responsible for ensuring happy customers in his new position as Head of Sales. Both of them have performed an outstanding service as deputies in their respective areas and have gained the requisite experience. We firmly believe that, in taking this step, we will be able to respond faster to the needs of customers and staff alike and are looking forward to working together successfully!

April 2019
w-lagerbox.ch gets a gentle facelift. Three and a half years after being launched, the website has been given a modest redesign, transforming it from a rather spartan-looking online booking platform into a comprehensive storage and warehousing platform. The new site is more modern, more personal and more informative, and features more pictures and video clips, allowing our customers to get an overview of our storage options and add-on services really quickly and easily. The website is now easier to navigate and it showcases our varied content more effectively.

September 2018
Winterthur after-work event and open evening. Following the successful opening of our new branch in Winterthur’s Töss district in the spring, we wanted to invite our customers, suppliers and friends to get a rare glimpse behind the scenes at our state-of-the-art removal company. In a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, our guests had the opportunity to see for themselves what makes our self-storage units so handy and so popular and learn more about the ‹W› philosophy, the ‹W› services and, of course, our company’s claim “Moving and storage done simply”.

April 2018
The new ‹W› branch in Winterthur was finished and opened, complete with office, Packaging Shop and all ‹W› services in the customary ‹W› quality, as well as ‹W› Storage units and storage space spanning a total of 5,500 m².

March 2018
Cutting-edge internal communications – introducing the Beekeeper employee app. One team – across all sites and the whole company. Beekeeper will enable us to bring together all our employees from all departments and sites on a single platform in the future. This will give us an easy way to keep one another up to date, exchange opinions, help our fellow team members out, suggest ideas, give feedback, discuss problems, search for solutions, celebrate achievements, plan events and much more besides. It’s a really cool tool!

January 2018
Under the succession plan put in place at the Winterthur-based Thalmann Logistik AG, we have taken over responsibility for the company’s removal customers with effect from 1 January 2018 and would like to thank Urs Thalmann for the trust he has placed in us. We have been able to carve out a leading position in the Zurich region, and our new branch in Winterthur-Töss will now help us strengthen it further. This gives us the ideal platform for taking on Thalmann Logistik AG’s removal customers and providing them with the best possible support.

January 2017
The “Winterthur18” project team has begun its work planning the renovation, sales and marketing measures required for the new branch at In der Au 6 in Winterthur-Töss. They are keen to enter the market in the Winterthur region without delay and thus get the new branch in the city off to a successful start.

December 2016
Following the successful acquisition of Ulmerumzug, we used 2016 as an opportunity to restructure the entire organisational setup and workflows in the Wiedmer group of companies. We also introduced a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system in October 2016 as part of our efforts to standardise and optimise our processes and procedures.

January 2016
We acquired Ulmerumzug’s removals and storage operations with effect from 1 January 2016. This was the perfect opportunity for us to complement our new warehouse in Au/Wädenswil with Ulmer’s site in Wädenswil and thus serve customers on the western shore of Lake Zurich. Our vehicle and staffing capacity was also increased further with the aim of leveraging the synergy effects between “Wiedmer, Schmid and Ulmer” even more effectively. The “ulmerumzug” brand has been and is being continued under the ‹W› umbrella, while the site at Zugerstrasse 162 in Wädenswil will also remain open. All 37 staff (management, office and operations) have been taken on.

October 2015
Launch of w-lagerbox.ch - a new kind of self-storage service. ‹W› is revolutionising the storage market in a truly impressive way with an online service that outdoes everything that has gone before and helps customers find the right storage unit for them really quickly and easily.

› Bookable online at any time of day or night
› Available at short notice and can be cancelled at any time
› Round-the-clock access
› Billing accurate down to the exact day

October 2015
New warehouse in Au/Wädenswil – a five-storey self-storage building has been opened at Seestrasse 317 in Au/Wädenswil to serve customers on the western shore of Lake Zurich. Our customers thus now have access to an additional 500 state-of-the-art self-storage units.

May 2015
The addition of more self-storage units in Fällanden and Rümlang means that, since early May 2015, our customers have had access to over 300 units spread across three sites.

October 2014
We acquired a majority stake in the Spreitenbach-based Schmid AG, which will continue to operate as our subsidiary. A company with a long tradition, Schmid AG specialises in removals, cleaning and property maintenance: schmidservice.ch

June 2012
The offices and storerooms in Rümlang were completely renovated and modernised between February and June 2012, with over 80 self-storage units being installed in the basement. We celebrated the grand reopening in June 2012 together with the building’s owner, the architect, the tradespeople involved and, of course, with all our staff, customers, suppliers, friends and acquaintances. Ever since then, we have been offering our customers at the Rümlang site “moving and storage done simply” in the exceptional quality to which they have become accustomed.

April 2011
With the integration of “Leuthold Transporte Umzüge, Lagerhaus” on 1 April 2011, we also gained a foothold in the Zürcher Unterland region – specifically at Bahnhofplatz 6 in Rümlang. This move saw us expand our already extensive removals and storage operations to now take in northern Zurich as well. The stronger position in the region that this gave us allowed us to meet our customers’ needs even more comprehensively and offer optimised and bespoke solutions – numerous individual services coming together to make one perfect whole!

October 2010
Holliger joins the family...
Anton and Margrith Holliger, owners of “Holliger-Transporte” in Volketswil, took their well-earned retirement in autumn 2010. Their decision to hand their business on to w. wiedmer ag benefited both parties, not least since it was the perfect way to ensure the continuation of the personal, reliable and trustworthy service that customers were used to. For our customers, the integration of “Holliger Transporte” meant even greater performance, flexibility and proximity alongside the proven ‹W› quality.

2009 and 2010
These two years were initially given over to “finding our feet” in Fällanden. After that, we felt completely at home in the town and were looking forward to enjoying healthy growth: new staff, new vehicles, better infrastructure, improved training, more certificates and so on. We soon managed to gain a foothold in the region and win lots of new customers. Maybe one of the reasons was because we feel so comfortable here...

November 2008
Relocation to Industriestrasse 11 in Fällanden.
A new chapter in the Wiedmer story was opened when we moved into our own premises. Not just us but in particular our valued customers could look forward to even more “moving done simply”. Our already popular range of services was thus complemented by better infrastructure, new offices, new warehouses and a highly inviting Packaging Shop.

Early 2008
We changed our look from that of the “Wiedmer” commercial enterprise to the orange “W” brand representing our comprehensive removal services. Our strategic focus was broadened with the addition of new services that were even more customer-friendly. These ranged from cleaning and handovers of keys through to filling the fridge in a customer’s new home, and even catering for housewarming parties, including sending out invitations and organising the whole show. We at Wiedmer transform house moving into a simple and straightforward process that is stress-free and relaxing for our customers.

2001 - 2007
The company saw steady growth, developing further and gaining new specialisms in various different areas. New staff and vehicles were added on an ongoing basis. In 2001, the company was finally changed from a general partnership into the company limited by shares (“Aktiengesellschaft”) that it remains today. Backed by reliability, trustworthiness and a professional approach to carrying out its jobs, w. wiedmer ag evolved into a medium-sized company with a strong position in Switzerland. It was enlarged further in 2005 with the acquisition of another company, Buchwalder Transporte GmbH. More new sites in Gossau and the Albisrieden-based Zürcher Freilager AG came on board in 2005 and 2006. w. wiedmer AG also endeavours to adapt to the needs of the market and its customers at all times. For instance, it routinely introduces new tools in both its internal and field sales teams, so that enquiries can be handled as quickly and efficiently as possible. 2007 saw the construction of modern storage units in Zurich, with more following in Schwerzenbach.

1990 - 2000
The company enjoyed extremely healthy growth. This prompted it in 1991 to acquire its warehouse on Grossacherstrasse in Hombrechtikon, which still stands today, to make sure once again that it had sufficient storage and commercial space at its disposal. Another benefit was that the branch office now allowed the Zürcher Oberland region to be served faster and more extensively as well, since our vehicles did not have to travel as far. The next relocation came in 1995, when we moved our head office from Arbenzstrasse to Badenerstrasse. Our new headquarters provided space for the office, ample storage for the Zurich city region and parking for the company’s entire fleet of vehicles, all on a single site.

1980 -1990
1983 saw the purchase of an additional building in Effretikon, which also served as storage. Our prompt and reliable services attracted more new customers and enabled us to increase the size of our vehicle fleet accordingly. This period was also the right time to welcome the founder’s two sons into the business: Willy Jr in 1984 and Thomas in 1987. The family business was now complete. Finally, in 1989, the one-man company “W. Wiedmer” became a general partnership called “W. Wiedmer & Co.”, with Willy Wiedmer Sr, his wife and their two sons as partners holding equal rights. By this time, what started life as solely a transport company had continued to develop and was now also an expert in private and business removals as well as storage.

1970 - 1980
Although business was booming, Willy Wiedmer Sr wanted to offer his customers more than just transports. In 1972, he moved the business to Kanzleistrasse, where storage space was made available for the first time. It seemed as if he was providing just what was needed at that very moment. The company soon had to rent storage space in all manner of different places, and it kept on growing. Willy Wiedmer Sr bought a property in Esslingen in 1976, which enabled him to combine his home and a large enough warehouse under one roof. Only the office remained on Arbenzstrasse, where there was now enough space for it.

1960 - 1970
Willy Wiedmer Sr began to do some work on the side as a freight forwarder in 1961. He always aimed to serve his customers punctually, reliably and professionally in his spare time, which soon brought him so many orders that he was earning enough from transports to make a living and turned it into his main job without further ado. The one-man business “W. Wiedmer” was officially formed in 1963. Its head office was on Arbenzstrasse in Zurich, where Willy Wiedmer Sr was living at the time. Armed with two vehicles and a living room serving as an office, he handled his ever-increasing number of orders with aplomb.
